The Lion and the Bear
FERPA compliance is an administrative bear to colleges and universities. This powerpoint presentation shows TCNJ Lions’ compliance to these standards.
FERPA TUTORIAL
The purpose of the FERPA tutorial is to provide a foundational understanding of FERPA. You can always consult Records and Registration or your department head for clarification.
The College of New Jersey recognizes that there is a delicate balance between the responsibility for maintaining student privacy rights and the responsibility for providing effective and efficient service to our students. To maintain that balance, it is essential that all members of the campus community who use student data understand the issues related to student privacy and the handling of student information.
This process should start with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law and is the touchstone of student privacy at The College of New Jersey and institutions of higher education throughout the United States. The tutorial and quiz that follows is intended to introduce TCNJ faculty and staff as authorized members of the campus community to understand the responsibilities of handling student records under FERPA. We appreciate your cooperation as The College strives to balance access with privacy.
Every TCNJ employee with access to education records must maintain the confidentiality of those records! WHY?
BECAUSE STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONFIDENTIALITY OF THEIR EDUCATION RECORDS.
BECAUSE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REQUIRES US TO DO SO – IT’S THE LAW.
BECAUSE IT’S THE ETHICAL THING TO DO.
