Can a Student Restrict the College from Releasing Directory Information?
Yes. Under FERPA, the College must allow a student to opt out of the release of directory information. Students are informed of this option to restrict directory information during the Annual Notification. Students are instructed to complete a form to request that the Office of Records and Registration restrict directory information. Directory information that is restricted may not be released without written permission from the student, unless the request for release fits certain exceptions as discussed earlier. Faculty and staff cannot assume that because an item is directory information it can be disclosed. All requests to withhold directory information are flagged on the student’s record in PAWS.
